Magnificent and never done before fully illustrated world history of museums. A complete political, social and cultural perspective.
Humans have had the impulse for millennia to conserve, acquire, accumulate objects deemed beautiful, interesting, intriguing or rare, for their personal pleasure, but also as an attribute or privilege of their power and wealth.
It is from these first collections that little by little the modern museums we know today have emerged, dedicated to the conservation of objects, constantly in movement, in creation, in questioning, for the greatest delight, and education, of the masses. No “history of the museum” such as this has ever been attempted.

Contents
• Vol. 1 : FROM TREASURE TO MUSEUM
• Vol. 2 : THE EUROPEAN ENCHORING 1789-1850
• Vol. 3 : THE MUSEUM CONQUEST OF THE WORLD

Vol. 1: FROM TREASURE TO MUSEUM

The first volume consists in relating how museums evolved from private collections to modern institutions: from a distant past to the first museums of Art and nature discovery, via the royal treasures of the Middle Ages. A history made of donations and commerce, of theft and looting, of wars and diplomacy. But also of architecture, of ways of contemplating and handling objects, of legal and organizational problems. A history of art, but also of commerce, knowledge and techniques.

Vol. 2: THE EUROPEAN ENCHORING 1789-1850

The second volume deals with the European anchoring of museums, invented in Italy at the end of the 15th century, spreading all over Europe and especially France, Spain, England, the German states, the Austrian Empire and Sweden, in the 18th century. It will span from the French Revolution to the 1950’s.

Vol. 3: THE MUSEUM CONQUEST OF THE WORLD, to be published in March 2022
The third volume covers the museum conquest of the world, from the industrial revolution to the present day. A diversification of content with the World’s fair, history ethnology, nature, science and art museums, a geographical spreading towards East and South, then West, the consequences of the wars, the new challenges museums face or embrace.
